NISSAN INAUGURATES NEW PLANT IN ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

May 29th, 2009

Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn today joined more than 1000 guests and employees at the opening event marking the start of production at the company’s new US$200 million assembly plant in St. Petersburg, Russia. With the capacity to produce 50,000 vehicles a year, the facility will build the business-class sedan Nissan Teana and Nissan X-TRAIL compact sport utility vehicle.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by the representatives of federal and regional government led by Mr. Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia with Valentina Matvienko, Governor of St. Petersburg.

“This is Nissan’s breakthrough in Russia,” said Ghosn. “The opening of our plant in Saint Petersburg in the current conditions underlines our confidence in the high potential of the Russian economy. With the start of production at our new plant Nissan become an integral part of the local community.”

The St. Petersburg Plant is scheduled to employ 750 workers at start of production with one shift. Additional jobs are being created by Nissan supplier companies and businesses that will support operations at the St. Petersburg Plant. The new plant will be an important contributor to Nissan’s vision of sustainable growth and return to profitability.

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. has announced its plans to build a new manufacturing plant in St. Petersburg three years ago, on April 25, 2006. On June 13, 2006, within the framework of the 10th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the St. Petersburg Government and an Investment Agreement with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation for the industrial car assembly. In February 2007 the Government of St. Petersburg gave this project the status of strategic investment project of St. Petersburg. An official ground-breaking ceremony took place on July 8, 2007.

Nissan always seeks for the opportunity to produce vehicles closer to the market to have more flexibility in adapting to the changing market demands and to use all the benefits of close-to-market production. Today the share of Nissan in the Russian total industry volume totals 5.7%. For Nissan, Russia represents one of the key global markets, ranking number one market in Europe and standing as number five globally. It also is an important part of Nissan and Renault-Nissan alliance strategy.

As everywhere in the world Nissan will organize all production activities in full compliance with its global manufacturing method named Nissan Production Way (NPW). This production philosophy ensures the quality of produced cars at the highest level in accordance with international standards.

Fujio Hosaka, General Director of Nissan Manufacturing Russia, said: “The St. Petersburg plant allows Nissan to localize our production and contribute to the development of the domestic auto industry. We hope to support to the local economy by creating employment opportunities, sharing of advanced technologies and development of the supply chain.”

Employing 180,000 people worldwide Nissan plans to design, produce and sell over 3 million passenger cars and commercial vehicles in more than 190 countries in fiscal year 2009.

GT Channel: Mine?s Boss Niikura-san on New Generation of Tuning Parts and Mine?s SpecV

May 6th, 2009

GT Channel have had a long friendship with Mine’s and Niikura-san certainly seems to love their cameras. They recently hit up the Mine’s HQ in Yokosuka, Japan to check out what the Mine’s guys have in the pipeline and what their plans are for the new Nissan GT-R SpecV.

As discussed in the video, probably some of the most exciting news which we have touched on previously, is that Mine’s are indeed developing a full engine upgrade called the Mine’s Super Complete Engine. We’re now aware that Mine’s will be shooting for about 600ps peak power but that, in the Mine’s tradition, the power will be delivered very early and in a very responsive manner.

Mine’s have always been about maximum response at modest power levels. That was powerfully evident in the Mine’s R34 GT-R of days gone by. Now by utilizing Mahle forged pistons and titanium I-beam conrods they plan to lighten and strengthen the VR38’s internals to be stronger and more free revving. They’re shaving off more than 300g per cylinder with just these mods.

The second video (after the jump) goes into great detail on the mine’s Super Big Throttle Body coming soon also.

Thanks to Taro from GT Channel for the heads up!

Forged Performance Guide to Nissan GT-R Boost Control

April 28th, 2009

forged-boost-104

Sharif from Forged Performance has taken time out to post up an “Everything You Wanted to Know…” thread over on NAGTROC regarding boost control on the Nissan GT-R. A great idea I though as one of the first things many a new owner thinks about is more power right… Therein is one of the beauties of forced induction.

The GT-R is no pussy cat to begin with but a tweak of the boost courtesy of a ECU tune, boost controller or actuator upgrade can open your eyes to a new level of power, even on the standard turbos.

If more-boost-done-properly is something you’re chasing for your GT-R you should check out this thread and if you have any questions ask away. Sharif and Forged Performance are recognized as being well ahead of the curve in terms of tuning the GT-R and have most likely come across your situation in the past.

Jalopnik: Switzer’s P800 - 707 awhp Nissan GT-R Driven

April 15th, 2009

jalopnik-switzer-001

It’s not everyday that a tuner the caliber of Switzer Performance makes an invitation to press to come try out their latest and greatest behemoth but that’s just what they did. On the dyno this beast reels off a solid 707 awhp (527kw) and 603 lb/ft (817 Nm) of torque which is good enough for a 3.35 0-60mph without resorting to the GT-R’s fabled launch control.

Jalopnik were the first to write up their experiences with the P800 on a miserable looking day on a snowy wet track. Good things to be said all round and well written to boot.

Check it out at the link below, video and tonnes more photos in their gallery over on Jalopnik…

Tommy Kaira Sets Sights on Nissan GT-R for Next Generation

April 12th, 2009
tommykaira-gtr-001
Tommy Kaira has announced that they will be following up their past complete cars with the next generation of Nissan sports cars. Namely the Nissan GT-R and Nissan 370z. Tommy Kaira complete cars traditionally have enhanced the exterior with subtle yet aggressive body lines but often can step into the exotic realm in the case of their Tommy Kaira ZZ-II. Interior work usually follows but changes remain subtle yet classy.
Backed by Autobacs Japan’s Sportscar Laboratory (ASL) it should be interesting to see what this legendary styling tuner can come up with for the GT-R.
We’ve got a couple of videos and a photo gallery after the jump of previous Tommy Kaira cars…
